NordVPN Common Problems
NordVPN’s technical performance rarely draws complaints. Most of the problems below involve billing, fine print, and software changes, which quick-take reviews tend to skip.
The renewal price jump (and the cheaper price you can’t see)
Most reviewers mention that renewal prices can more than double if your plan auto-renews. Fewer mention what users say happens next. One long-time customer reported that a lower price was offered on their own account page, but only to new sign-ups. Others say auto-renewal was on by default, and some believed they had switched it off. NordVPN’s position is that it emails a renewal reminder with the new price before charging. Check that inbox folder, and set a calendar reminder for a few weeks before your term ends.
Tax is added on top
NordVPN adds local tax to its headline price, while many rival VPNs include it in the advertised cost. The checkout total can therefore be higher than you expected.
Refunds depend on where you bought
Buying through an app store complicates refunds. You may have to ask Apple for the refund instead of NordVPN. A related point is that some users believed cancelling auto-renewal would void the 30-day guarantee. NordVPN says it doesn’t tie refund eligibility to the auto-renewal setting. Buying directly from NordVPN’s site avoids the middleman.
Features can appear and disappear
NordVPN announced in 2025 that it would shut down Meshnet, then reversed the decision after backlash. The company said only about 1% of subscribers actually used the feature. The reversal was good news, but it shows that a feature you subscribe for isn’t guaranteed to last. If one specific extra is why you’re buying, don’t prepay for two years on that basis alone.
Mac users get a thinner app
Tom’s Guide reported that the macOS app lacks split tunneling and a full-system kill switch. Verify this against the current version before you buy, since apps change often. Windows and Android users shouldn’t assume the Mac app matches them feature for feature.
Updates sometimes break things
Some reviewers describe an app update that would not connect to their network, along with an auto-connect feature that never worked reliably. Another reported that the VPN changed the PC’s configuration and caused repeated restarts. These are individual accounts, not proof of a widespread bug. NordVPN’s usual first suggestion for connection trouble is switching the protocol to NordLynx in the app settings. If your connection breaks after an update, try a different protocol before opening a ticket, and keep your previous installer around.
How to protect yourself
- Don’t buy NordVPN through an app store.
- Turn off auto-renewal right after you buy. TechRadar’s analysis of Play Store reviews found billing, auto-renewal, and price hikes dominated the complaints.
- Record your renewal date and the price you were quoted.
- Test your must-have features, such as your streaming service, on your actual devices during the 30-day window.
None of this makes NordVPN a bad service. The usual advice is to sign up, test it during the refund window, and decide before the first renewal.
